Meet our management team:

Shawn Balding, P. Eng
General Manager

Shawn Balding is the General Manager of Canal Marine & Industrial Inc. He holds an Electrical Engineering degree from the University of Victoria and has more than 25 years of electrical industry experience including roles as a patented power supply designer, North American engineering manager and global offer safety chair with multinational electrical equipment manufacturers. Since early 2018 Shawn has been wholly focused on advancing the marine industry towards a cleaner, sustainable and more electrified future.

Chris Wright, P. Eng
Chief Technology Officer

Chris Wright is the Chief Technology Officer of Canal Marine and Industrial Inc., has been working in the field of electrical engineering design since graduating over 30 years ago. For the last sixteen years he has specialized in the design of marine power and propulsion systems and has first-hand experience of the trend towards increasing electrification. Chris has been at the forefront of new trends in electrified propulsion, including alternative energy systems such as the Marilyn Bell I, a zero-emission ferry at the Toronto Island Airport. He has been responsible for the design and implementation of numerous hybrid workboats across Europe and N. America.

William (Bill) Inwood
Owner

Bill has led CANAL Marine and Industrial since 2013 where he began with a mandate to expand business and extend CANAL’s scope of marine electrical work. This expansion in capabilities included advanced marine electrical engineering services as well as engineered solutions tailored to address the complex power and propulsion demands of contemporary vessels and the evolving sustainability requirements of the maritime industry. Under Bill’s leadership CANAL has taken on projects covering off the electrification of ferries, hybrid propulsion of various workboats across North America, strengthened its electrical and communications services work and become an important engineering services arm at major Canadian shipyards as part of the National Shipbuilding Strategy.
